We Call Them Pirates Hat
Made for the special occasion of my brother Max’s 19th b-day.
Pattern: We Call Them Pirates from Hello Yarn. Can you believe this incredible pattern is available for FREE?! Amazing.
Yarn: I used the recommended Dale of Norway “Hauk” (I can’t find it on the Dale site now, I got it from WEBS). It is a crazy yarn that is treated with teflon to make it water repellent. Hopefully Max will let me know how well that works because I am very curious.
Mods: None!
Guts:
I need to work on my sewing skills because the hem is pretty puckery. You can’t tell when the hat is stretched out or on and Max didn’t care but I think next time I will pin it out more carefully (I didn’t have any pins).
I was a bit worried as I was knitting that the hat would come out too small. Max has a rather large head and big dreadlocks but I thought a whole extra pattern repeat would be too big for sure so I just knit the hat as per the pattern which gives a 21″ circumference. When I finished the hat and took it off the needles it fit me perfectly so I was even more worried that it would not fit my fat haired brother. Hmm… When I went over to give the hat to him, Max came out of his room declaring, “I shaved my head last night.” (Probably at the exact instant I was trying his hat on and declaring it too small). The hat fits perfectly and he needs a hat because now he has no hair! Hurray!
So did Max like his hat?
You betcha! A clue: He didn’t have to change his shirt for these pictures.
