Yarn Puzzle

A few weeks ago I won a little contest over on Yahaira’s Bitter Purl blog. The contest was to celebrate her blogoversary and also to help her chose a pattern for a unique yarn, her post on it is here.

Anyways after a thorough reading of the instructions I suggested the Hypoteneuse Stole, won yarn and when the yarn came it was very very pretty and sumptious and screamed “Adrienne,” to me (it’s her colors, it’s very red and purple in real life) and so I gave it to her and told her to make a Clapotis with it (of course!).  Thanks Yahaira!!!

I really loved puzzling out Yahaira’s yarn puzzle for her and reading everyone else’s suggestions for her yarn.

I think most of us have some Yarn Puzzles in our stashes. Yarn that is really really awesome but difficult to select a pattern for. Yarn that is really special and unique and you want to find just-exactly-the-right pattern for it (yes, I am a perfectionist, why do you ask?).

This is a long-winded way of me saying, “Folks, I need your help. I have awesome yarn and I want to knit it but I can’t decide what to make!”

My parents got this yarn for me when they were visiting my brother in Bellingham last month!

Specs:
Yarn: Spincycle Yarns
Fiber: 100 % BFL
Weight: Worsted
Yardage: 120 yards

The color-way that my parents picked out for me is “Ursus Horribilis” which is the scientific name for Grizzly Bears and is inspired by same noble beasts.

Please help me decide what to make with this awesome yarn!!! My yardage is limited so I was leaning towards a simple hat to show off the yarn. Probably not an ear-flap hat because I never wear the earflap hat I have.

Any suggestions?

mmm… colors…

I think it would be great if you were to post your own Yarn Puzzles and then tell me about them! I think that sometimes it’s easier to puzzle out yarns from afar and even if I don’t get the exact right pattern maybe I’ll get poked in the right direction! It’s also a great way to show off and share some of the really great yarns in your stash! I know I have more of these lovely but tricky yarns.

(your comment box is being weird, apologies for the funny spacing):

Oooh, ooh, I have an idea (but it is not a hat)! I think that yarn would
    look fantastic as a
    Beech Wood
(Ravelry Link) cowl. I’m knitting one right now out of Malabrigo and
it’s a really nice pattern for showing off pretty yarns. And I think the
earth-tones of that yarn would play really nicely with all the textured
    stitches.

I will have to look through my stash to see what sorts of Puzzles lie within.

ohhh, i’m so bad at this game, but i love that yarn! and what a name, right? i would also vote for a cowl. they’re all the rage now, aren’t they? have fun making a choice!

I would suggest a cowl. I think they are beautiful for small amounts of yarn, they show off the yarn in any stitch pattern you want, they are realtively small & I wear thema ll th etime. I think I wear them more then scarves (becuase they never come uncoiled!)

    Just a thought :D

A hat was my first thought. I love hats.

I would do a simple one with a garter stitch brim. My go-to pattern is Kim’s Hats in Last Minute Knitted Gifts but really once you’ve knit a hat before, it’s an easy thing to fudge.

Hmm… I really like the Unoriginal Hat. I don’t normally like cabling and colors or handspun, but it looks great.

sadly, I have no ideas for the hat (simple top-down to show off the yarn, knit until you run out?), but I have to comment on the last post (which I somehow missed): Best. Job. Ever. lucky you!!!

I like this cowl pattern…. and I think you could do it with that much yarn. I love it because it works as both a neck warmer or a head/ear warmer when I need it (like when sleeping while camping).

    Very pretty yarn!

this is some of the nicest yarn I have ever seen! what nice parents! I really like how handspun looks in garter stitch. I looked on ravelry and got overexcited (apologies for not being able to link them due to crummy computer skills)
Silver birch by colinette- a very nice garter stitch hat
sideways mystery mittens Elizabeth Zimmermann- i think these are amazing.
    Ysolda’s garter stitch mitts
Cherry by Helga Isager- a garter stitch scarf which seems to have ingenious loops and is hard to explain.
( i have been thinking too much about this because I should be working)
have a nice time at the wool festival!

The first thing I thought of was a nice neckwarmer, or cowl. It gets so chilly in Juneau in the summer months (well, all months), so it’ll get a lot of use and you’ll be able to show off the pretty yarn all the time! :)

sorry for too many comments. The morning surf scarf looks so nice in handspun. Could you use that stitch pattern to make a cowl, as it’s one skein?
