Cabled Mittens
I made these mittens because my hands were cold. I sort of followed the “Super Mittens” pattern from Weekend Knitting, but I changed everything and added a cable.
(Note that I am being electrocuted in the second picture, these were taken during physics lab. I am also wearing my panta.)
I learned two important lessons while knitting these:
A) When you are changing a pattern make sure you write down the changes you make so that when it comes time to make a second one, they can hopefully be the same.
B) Ribbing, while unsightly, really does help keep your mittens on, I wish these had some.
Weekend Knitting is a really great book. I enjoy it a lot. I also made the fingerless mitts for my husband for Xmas. It also has lots of fun stuff like books with knitting in them.

don’t forget the photo credits!!!
ps, the mittens are pretty cool too.
I’ve made a few pairs of the “super mittens” and I LOVE them. If you actually follow the pattern, the cuff is pretty substantial, and ends up going over your coat/sweater/whatever you wear them with, so they are easy to put on, and actually stay on really well. I would suggest whipping up an original pair, they’re worth the try.
If you have leftover yarn for your mittens, you could always pick up stitches along the bottom edge of the mitten and create a ribbed cuff. It is just that the mittens may then extend quite a ways back on your wrist/lower arm. But never be afraid to pick up stitches to create a border or ribbing when you need to.
